In spite of all the wonderful things about working at home, there’s always the very real chance of risking burn out and getting stressed because you’re working all the time. That’s the one negative about working from home. Your home office is always there for you to walk into it even when you’re supposed to be done for the day. You’ve set yourself up to become a workaholic because your work is always there waiting and beckoning to you to do just one more thing.
If you give into the constant call of work while also trying to balance your personal life, there will be many times that you feel stressed. This can be followed by a severe case of burn out. When burn out hits, it can sometimes be the end of your work at home career because you just will not want to do that work anything. It’s not a lot of fun to do your work anymore because you let it take over your life.
The first thing you need to make sure you do is take regular days off and don’t let anything get in the way of that. Don’t make it a habit to work 7 days a week. Not only is it unhealthy but it’s the fastest way to kill your interest in whatever sort of work it is that you do. After spending so much time trying to make a success of your business or your career, it seems a shame to lose all of that simply because you need a lesson in time management.
That brings up the next point: time management. Working from home can be challenging enough without always scurrying around to find the time to do things. Mastering the art of time management is vital for all work at home jobs. This may mean following a routine or setting a schedule so that you can be sure to get everything done. If that’s what it takes, then that’s what you have to do. Figure out when you can comfortably and energetically start your day and then go from there. Take regular breaks throughout the day and end at a reasonable time. Turn out your light. Disconnect from the computer. Walk out of your office and close the door.
Next, you need to resist all urges to return to your desk to do “just one more thing.” That’s the kiss of death to all of your best laid plans for staying organized and remaining unstressed. If you want to make a success of your work at home career, make sure that you get plenty of time for yourself and to spend with your friends and family. Don’t spend time thinking about work once you’ve walked away from your office. When you’re done for the day, you need to remain that way.
In the end, there’s nothing more effective in saving your sanity and keeping your work at home job a success than making sure you keep to a schedule that makes sense.
