One of the criteria for a great job for a work at home mom is that it should be a job that doesnt take a big investment to get started. Most of us have a computer and most computers have a word processor. That means that right under your nose is a work-at-home job that is easy to get started doing and that is in high demand. That skill is writing.
There is a huge market that is crying out for good writers. That market is the internet. When you think of making your work at home career the job of writing, you naturally think about writing the great American novel. But most professionals who make their living writing do not write short stories or novels. The interent needs people who are good with words to write articles, ebooks, online courses and website content for an always changing internet that never can get enough good writing.
Have you ever gone on a web site that might be well designed and works well but the writing of the text is terrible? We all have had that experience. The problem is that people who are internet programming wizards are not necessarily skilled writers. If you have that skill to be able to craft a short article or essay that communicates well a given principle and you feel you can use that skill for a wide variety of topics, internet writing is for you.
It is a job that is perfect for the stay-at-home mom. Generally, you will work on a “per project” basis. That means that a web developer might hire you to write 20 articles about baby strollers. He will have specific requirements in terms of size and format but those requirements are rarely hard to meet. There will be a deadline and it is up to you to write the articles, proofread and edit them and deliver them to the customer in the format they like by the deadline.
You can work on your writing assignments on your schedule. If you are a morning person, you can rise a couple hours before you have to mobilize the family for work and school and do some writing before the sun comes up. If you have an hour before going to get the kids from school, knock out several articles. Writing for the internet is a job that is very easy to mold around the schedule of a busy mom.
To find jobs, you should look for some internet job boards. There are some very active ones like Rent-a-Coder and Elance that handle literally thousands of jobs providing work to hundreds of writers and other work at home contractors day in and day out. The registration for these services is free but you pay the service a percentage of what you make for providing a platform for the management of jobs for you. Think them as your agents in finding business.
There are also article content websites where you can write about what you know or what you are interested in and post your articles to the site. Then if your articles get a lot of “traffic”, they eventually pay you a small amount for writing that article. To succeed on these sites, you have to post a lot of content to the site. But you can write about things you are passionate about and get paid for doing it. And that is what makes writing for a living a great job that fits your lifestyle and that is fun to do as well.
